Trump is an opportunist, of course. As noted, he jumped into the Iran-Israel affair to gain political capital. Perhaps. But what he has clearly shown, again, votes not body bags are his chief metric. Sadly, his metric reflects the general sentiment in Congress. They can stop it. They likely won’t until their seat with its perks and $$ are threatened. Make good trouble.
No longer is the consequential divide Republicans vs. Democrats, although those labels still dominate elections and governments.
On the ground, the divide is between pro-authoritarian MAGA vs. “we the people” of the pro-Constitution opposition, which includes many Republicans and independents.
We need to keep the opposition tent open to all and start working on our own Project 2026 that translates what we oppose into what we propose. Maybe the DNC can learn from us.
As a retired woman, I have participated in protests and calling my legislature and writing emails. We've (husband and I) have made donations to ActBlue and others. I post on social media. I've thought about stopping my tax withholding on my SSA benefits, but no one will notice until next April. The Democrats in my county are finally organizing. We have not had a Democrat in the primary for years. I'd love suggestions of ways for people like us to not participate in this nightmare empire.
Absolutely brilliant, Mary. If I still traveled and entertained often, I'd try to arrange a meeting. I love the way you think and write. Making this cluster (as in f**k) humorous and informative is the best type of writing, often. Great close. We need to do more. I've never been in a Walmart, btw. I've never liked their behavior.

Of course no matter how "concerned" Susan Collins is, she will still vote the party line. She is way past her expiration date.

this is the truth, if we do not stand as one, and soon, it's over
You've laid it out, the consequences are many. Take to the street, but not with No King's signs, that's much too tepid. No More War!!! ENOUGH!!!!
